The “Breton Stripe” was created for the French Navy. It is said they chose this pattern to be able to see a sailor if he fell overboard because the white bands would stand out from the water. Why do they have 21 stripes? To salute Napoleon, with each Navy line representing a victory at sea against Britain. It was Coco Chanel who took it from coast to catwalk in the 1900s, turning it into an item of unisex dress that has had wave after wave of supporters ever since.
