We’ve always had a special relationship with Bali. The beautiful Indonesian island is home to some of the most spectacular coral reefs and arrays of marine wildlife we’ve ever seen. It also has some of the world’s best surf breaks, right on your beach hut’s stoop. Matt Power, a photographer friend of ours, also spends much of the year there, making us seriously envious with incredible shots of waves, waterfalls and jungle backdrops.
While nature, rich local culture and healthy food are always the highlights of any trip to this magical isle, we couldn’t help but notice people’s footwear choices. Open-toe flip-flops or sandals were everywhere in this tropical clime, but with a sustainable twist. We realised that much of the footwear we liked the most came from the same brand, Indosole.
We walked into their shop in the famous surf town of Uluwatu and instantly fell in love with the brand, the product, and the super-friendly staff. We left with new recycled footwear for those in the family who needed it and vowed to have TWOTHIRDS and Indosole collab one day. Now that day is here, and we’re so excited!
What Makes Indosole Special?
Local artisan production that supports local communities has always been a core principle at TWOTHIRDS. We know how difficult it can be to remain true to it, and we have huge respect for any brand that does. Indosole is so beautifully embedded in their local community. They employ local people and have a mission to clean up their local ocean community, supporting beach clean-up operations along with many other great initiatives.
While local production is important, it doesn’t count for much if the product is unsustainable. At TWOTHIRDS we do this by running a PRE-ORDER service that eliminates overproduction waste. We also source European fabrics and yarns derived from only the finest organic, botanic or recycled materials.
Indosole approaches things slightly differently, focusing 100% on tackling an environmental problem faced by their local community: waste tires. According to Indosole, 1.5 billion tires are discarded or burnt worldwide every year. Since they were founded in 2009, the company has upcycled over 80,000 of them, a remarkable achievement.
True Slow Fashion X Recycled Footwear
Our Blue Community often asks if we will ever release a footwear range. This is the next best thing. For our community members, it means they can select complete summer outfits, safe in the knowledge that the clothing and footwear they choose have made a positive impact on local people and the ocean. The next time we head back to Bali, we would love to spot some surfers or beach goers sporting TWOTHIRDS X Indosole combos.
