Learn How to Make Organic Seaweed Art

When you see a print on a TWOTHIRDS t-shirt it’s often the case that it was created by a local Mediterranean artist or Emil, our Art Director. For our Pupukea t-shirt for Men and Padang t-shirt for Women (out now, by the way ;)), Emil used an ancient photographic technique called Cyanotype to turn a piece of seaweed into a wearable work of ocean art.

Want to do the same? It’s so easy that the whole family can get involved:

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Plain fabric or paper
  • Cyanotype art kit with natural dyes from your local independent art shop
  • Brush
  • Dead seaweed or fallen leaf
  • OPTIONAL: pane of glass or plastic from picture frame

STEP 1:

Mix the two liquids in your Cyanotype kit in a dark room.

STEP 2:

Brush the mixture onto your plain fabric or paper.

STEP 3:

Place the seaweed (or leaf) flat on the fabric or paper.

STEP 4:

Head outside and place your artwork on a flat surface in direct sunlight for 5-10 minutes.

OPTIONAL STEP 5 - Adult Supervision Required:

Place a pane of glass or perspex plastic from a picture frame on top of the seaweed to hold it in place. This ensures you get a defined silhouette.

STEP 6:

Remove seaweed to reveal your incredible ocean-inspired artwork. Hurray!

More: The Making Of

Emil found the particular piece of seaweed used for the Pupukea and Padang t-shirts on his native Danish coast, while on a family trip. To conserve it properly, he pressed it between the pages of the sketch pad he carries everywhere. Upon his return to Barcelona, he created his seaweed art with a little help from the Spanish sun.

Both Available Now to PRE-ORDER

Both t-shirts are now available to PRE-ORDER and they are certainly worth the wait. The Pupukea is crafted from premium quality organic cotton and comes in an oversized fit. The Padang is made from a low impact blend of organic and recycled cotton and comes in a regular fit.

Good luck with your seaweed art and we’ll sea you again soon for more ocean art and stories!
