Happy World Oceans Day! This international event is undoubtedly one of the most important holidays in our calendar. But with seas acidifying and ice sheets melting, can we really use the word “Happy”?
The United Nations say that the ocean “connects, sustains, and supports us all”, a sentiment that’s especially true of our brand. Set up in 2010 with the aim of safeguarding the ocean from the effects of fast fashion, TWOTHIRDS is the blue company. We care passionately about leaving the ocean in the same way we found it: clean, vibrant, and altogether awesome.
Our founder, Lutz, describes the ocean as “an old friend” who provides strength in a world that is always changing - sometimes too fast. The ocean is said to absorb 90% of all human-made heat, so it is our best friend in the fight against climate change. Making it all the more important to take at least one day for ocean appreciation, if not many many more.
Throughout Ocean Day and Ocean Week we are offering a free gift with purchases over 200 euros!
What is World Oceans Day?
World Oceans Day is an annual celebration of the ocean, observed internationally on June 8th. Its purpose is to unite humanity to manage the ocean sustainably. World Oceans Day is facilitated by the UN, who first recognised it in 1992.
Why do we celebrate World Oceans day?
There are three simple reasons to celebrate World Oceans Day.
To raise awareness of the problems facing our oceans.
To discover the solutions.
To act!
From overfishing to warming waters, plastic pollution to decaying coral, overlapping issues are pushing the ocean closer and closer to various tipping points (read: sharp, sudden changes in environmental conditions) that would spell disaster for the communities and creatures who thrive in and around the ocean.
On World Oceans Day, the UN creates talks and workshops which draw together some of the most high-profile speakers in the world. The idea is to create an international collective, encompassing individuals, scientists, governments, conservationists, and businesses.
Millions of people demonstrate their love for the ocean on June 8th.
So why does TWOTHIRDS celebrate World Oceans Day? Well, as a brand that has made ocean protection its core philosophy, it’d be rude not to…
What is the theme for World Oceans Day 2022?
In 2022, UN World Oceans Day will focus on the following theme:
Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean
No idea what that means? We’ve got you. In the simplest terms, it’s about bringing the ocean back to life.
As we understand it, the United Nations will highlight the health of the ocean, while celebrating those who are already helping to heal it. The use of the word “Revitalize” is especially interesting, placing a subtle emphasis on the ocean as a living, breathing, part of the planet. According to the UN: “the past years have shown us (that) we need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.”
This positive approach to a “living ocean” has us convinced that World Oceans Day is something to be rather happy about after all.
The following topics are likely to be covered:
- Nature-based solutions like mangrove trees, which we’re also big fans of!
- Collective Action that brings everyone together.
- Blue Economy on the many economies that are intertwined with the ocean.
- Ocean Communities groups who are driving change and saving seas.
Of these categories, Ocean Communities and Nature-based solutions are particularly relevant to TWOTHIRDS. Over a decade and across several nations, our customers and our team have formed a unique online ocean community. Collectively, we’re pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in sustainable fashion, while proving that the ocean does indeed connect us all.
Which leads us to Nature-based solutions: projects which attempt to restore existing habitats through natural means and can also involve taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. This is true of our chosen Climate Neutrality project. Based in the Rimba Raya Nature Reserve in Indonesia, it protects one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. Read more about it here.
How to take action:
- Drop into a few UN talks. They’re streaming online from 4pm-7.30pm (CET) June 8th.
- Keep the conversation alive. The best ideas were made to be shared.
- Join the plastic-free revolution. Don’t waste an opportunity to ask your local stores (larger companies, even your city!) to go plastic-free.
- Stay curious. As writer Willow Defebaugh recently put it, “the more incredible we find this world, the more affinity we feel with it, the more we are moved to protect it.” The ocean is rich territory for discovery; you can explore a little bit of it every single day.
